7 Reasons Why You Should Drink More Water

Drink more water, live a healthier life.

It is important to remain hydrated so that our bodies function correctly and ward off infections and disease. In fact, every single system in your body runs on water. So, in order for your body to not only function properly but survive, you need to drink more water more often. Here’s why:

#1. Healthier skin

Most people don’t realize just how amazing water is for your skin. Water is the single most important factor for cellular integrity, effectively moisturizing your skin from the inside out. When I’m giving a Face Lift Massage, for example, it is clear if a client does not drink enough water because the skin on his or her face does not have the elasticity I expect. The tension does not release as easily and the wrinkles do not smooth out as well. If you want youthful, glowing, clear skin, look no further than your daily recommended intake of water.

#2. Flush out toxins

You kidneys are responsible for ridding your body of waste and toxins. Without properly functioning kidneys, your body will start to shut down. Guess what your kidneys function entirely on? Water. So drink more of it!

#3. Reduce your risk of heart attack

Getting your daily intake of water can cut your chances of having a heart attack in half. Seriously. If your family has a history of heart issues, then see this as a wake-up call to drink more water every day.

#4. Stay active longer

Drinking water effectively cushions and lubricates your joints and muscles, which can help prevent injury and keep you active longer. Dehydration is the leading cause of muscle cramps and fatigue, so water will keep those muscles and joints healthy!

#5. Get energized and be alert

Another cause of headaches, fatigue and irritability? Yup, you guessed it; dehydration. While you might be tempted to reach for another cup of coffee on those mornings when you just can’t seem to get with it, you should really be gulping down water instead. Your brain is 85 percent water and it, too, needs water to function properly.

#6. Slim down

Health and fitness experts agree: drinking water can help you lose weight. Oftentimes when your body is dehydrated, your brain will send signals that you can confuse with hunger instead of thirst. By drinking more water, you’ll not only keep your body hydrated, but it will stay fuller longer.

#7. Get (and stay) well

Dehydration can weaken your body’s immune system, leaving it susceptible to disease and infection. Also, your heart has to work harder due to the lack of oxygen caused, causing overall strain to your body. When you fall ill, water can help control a fever, replace lost fluids, and thin out mucus. It even helps prevent constipation by aiding with digestion, helping us absorb nutrients, and encouraging bowel movements.

Water seems like a wonder drug, doesn’t it? While it is not a complete cure-all, it definitely has major benefits for your overall health. Very simply, listen to your body. Drink when you feel thirsty. Drink before meals, before bed, and right when you wake up (your body dehydrates itself while you sleep). We’ve all heard that we should drink eight cups of water a day, which is about 1.9 liters total. Fortunately, what we eat can contribute up to 20 percent of your daily water intake. And if you’re not a fan of plain water, try seltzer (carbonated) water for a boost of fun.

Staying hydrated is also crucial after a massage session. Your muscles undergo a lot of work during a typical session and it’s of utmost importance that you drink more water than usual in order for your body to not become dehydrated. You’ll definitely feel it if you don’t!
